Smallest shoot some hoops !

A very big well done to our year 5/6 basketball team , who represented the school at a cluster competition at Aldercar School this week.
After travelling through successfully at the mini league stage , we were then matched against Coppice school in the semi-finals. From the tip off, this proved a very competitive game with Smalley winning 4-2.
In the final, we met local rivals Loscoe, who we had lost 2-1 earlier , and with a tremendous team effort and support from the sidelines from, we came from 1-0 down to run out 2-1 winners. The whole team gave 100 % , literally exhausted at times and did themselves and the school very proud.
We are now through to the borough finals on the 19th February at Swanwick school. A big thank you to all our fantastic parents who cheered and shouted themselves hoarse , and to the staff for their support .
Another fantastic success to celebrate !

Draughts Club!

Alex W and I both share a love for the game of draughts! After a conversation a few weeks back we came up with the great idea of a draughts lunchtime club.

Today was our first one and around 30 children turned up! We had a great time and I am pleased to say that I am still undefeated!

Smalley Strikers !

This Tuesday , two teams from our Yr 5/6 children attended an Amber Valley Schools football competition at Charles Hill Sports Ground. On this occasion, we were able to enter a girls team alongside our usual boys team.
Both teams gave their all and the boys came 3rd in their first league , going on to win their second league, winning against Kilburn and Ambergate .
The girls showed great enthusiasm and really enjoyed their first football tournament , even starting a Mexican wave in between games. A big thankyou to all our parents for attending and their support and to Mrs Drury for her help . Thanks again to the children for their excellent sportsmanship and behaviour throughout.
We look forward to arranging other fixtures within the cluster very soon. Watch this space !

Swimming Superstars!

I had the pleasure this afternoon of joining children from years 4,5 and 6 at the Heanor Swimming Gala.

It was a big event at William Gregg Leisure Centre with around 12 schools taking part.

First were the heats and our children performed incredibly well winning the majority of them. The top four swimmers from the heats then raced in fierce competition in the finals.

The children raced with great skill and determination and we were fortunate to win a few races with Georgina, Bethany, Elliott and Libby all picking up medals and our Year 3/4 relay team managed a win too!

I couldn't be prouder of our children, their behaviour, teamwork and focus was a joy to see.

A massive thank you to Mrs Shaw for a lot of organisation and work that was completed in her own spare time. This ensured the event was so successful.

Also, a huge thank you to all those parents and grandparents who came to support our children at the gala. We certainly had the best and loudest fans!!

What a great way to end the week. Awesome work children, go Smalley!

Smalley All Stars

Our year 5&6 pupils took part in a basketball tournament this evening involving the nine schools in our cluster.

The boys played incredibly well and represented the school brilliantly. We won through the group stages and were narrowly beaten by Howitt in the semi-finals.

Thank you to Mrs Shaw and Mrs Evans for taking the children and to all the parents for their support.

Y3/4 Athletics Finals 2013

I was lucky enough to attend the Y3/4 Athletics Finals after school at Alfreton Leisure Centre. There were 12 schools that had come either first or second on their regional heats.

Our fantastic team of 9 children were amazing and showed great determination, skill and teamwork as they took part in various field events before the races. Our children were so fast during the races if you blinked you would miss them.

When the results were announced we were all very proud to have come second amongst such stiff competition.

A massive thank you to Mrs Shaw and Mrs Evans for accompanying the team and their hard work.

Also, thank you to all our parents who gave great support as always.

Thank you to Amber Valley SSP for organising the event and to the sports leaders. What a fantastic event to end the half term.

Well done team!

Watch out Wimbledon!

A big well done to our boys and girls who represented our school in the local schools tennis competition at Duffield tennis club yesterday.
Each player played several short singles matches against a mixed ability range of players and held their nerve to win some key points. A special mention for Bradley, whose court matches ran over and had to play his final game in front of everyone there. A pressure moment indeed !
Out of the six schools taking part, we came runners up overall so advantage Smalley.  Watch out Wimbledon , we have some budding Roger Federer's or Serena Williams' of the future ,right here at Smalley school.. A very big thank you to our parents for their support also, from Mrs Rawlings and Mrs Shaw.

Smalley shoot some hoops!

Well done to our Year 5/6 basketball team who took part in an Amber Valley schools basketball tournament at Belper Leisure Centre last week. Despite being one of the shortest teams there, we gave an excellent account of ourselves and improved as the games went on. All the the children played extremely well , showed great commitment and were excellent sports. Mrs Rawlings, Mrs Bacon and myself were very proud of you all.
A big thank you once again to all the parents who came to support the children at the event. Harlem Globe Trotters watch out!
