Good luck Miss Hickling

The school wished a very special lady good luck today as she leaves us to start her maternity leave.

The children gave Miss Hickling lots of wise advice during Gold Book assembly including "get lots of sleep now while you can!"

We then had a lovely time as a staff team passing on lots of tips and good advice for when the baby arrives.

We wish you all the very best Miss Hickling and look forward to meeting your new arrival.

Good luck Miss Hickling

Anyone for tennis?

Mrs Rawlings, Mrs Shaw and Mrs Shelton took advantage of the fabulous tennis facility we have in our village this afternoon and inspired by Wimbledon went for a game with children from Years 4 and 5.

Inspired by Wimbledon who knows a future champion could have been playing this afternoon.

Thank you to the staff for giving our children a wonderful experience and to Smalley tennis club for allowing us to use their amazing facility.

BBC Film Cameras Come To Class 5

A BBC Camera  Crew came to record Class 5 singing their Brilliant Derby song as part of a 2023 News Script which will be premiered at the Brilliant Derby Gala Event on Tuesday at the Round House Pride Park.  Anica Taylor showed off her acting skills when she was asked to play a news reporter filming an outside broadcast live from Smalley School.

Last Wednesday morning Class 6 got the chance to take a short walk through our village to visit our local church. We were met by Reverend Lisa and many church members including Mrs Porter (one of our school Governors ), Mrs Walker and Mr Shaw. They had planned 6 activities so that we could learn about why Christians celebrate Pentecost - and what it all means. The children got to find out about all the good work the church do to give money to charities, such as, "The shoebox appeal" and "Seafarers".  There were many activities such as writing a letter to the Seafarers who are away from home for 7 or 8 months a year.

Well done to all Year 6 who were, once again a pleasure to take out and a credit to our school.

A visit from Specsavers.

Last  Tuesday (11th June ) Class 6 were lucky enough to have some special visitors from Specsavers to help support their learning as part of the Year 6 Science curriculum. An Opthalmic Optician, a Dispensing Optician and a Sales Consultant from the Belper branch had prepared a special talk and various activities all about how we see! The children got to take part in a quiz, hold some contact lenses and were even given pens and magazines!

My thanks to Mrs Barnes from our Parent Champion Group for organising the visit - it was a real treat.

Watch out Wimbledon!

A big well done to our boys and girls who represented our school in the local schools tennis competition at Duffield tennis club yesterday.
Each player played several short singles matches against a mixed ability range of players and held their nerve to win some key points. A special mention for Bradley, whose court matches ran over and had to play his final game in front of everyone there. A pressure moment indeed !
Out of the six schools taking part, we came runners up overall so advantage Smalley.  Watch out Wimbledon , we have some budding Roger Federer's or Serena Williams' of the future ,right here at Smalley school.. A very big thank you to our parents for their support also, from Mrs Rawlings and Mrs Shaw.

Watch out Wimbledon!
